MAINTENANCE: BETTER ON ELECTRIC

  • When it comes to maintenance, electric vehicles require much less than a traditional gasoline-fuelled vehicle. The difference comes down to moving parts; a traditional ICE can have over 20,000 moving parts, while a fully electric vehicle may have as few as 20.

    With a BEV, oil changes, tune-ups, timing belt changes, muffler repairs and more become a thing of the past. Since BEV’s have fewer moving parts, owners make fewer service trips and enjoy the benefit of less maintenance costs during the applicable warranty period. It is however, important to schedule regular check-ups to ensure your vehicle continues to perform at its best while catering to components specific to electric vehicles.

    Although less upkeep is required for electric vehicles, like all vehicles, colder weather, higher winds and snow or slushy roads will lead to shorter range. To help increase range, we suggest checking your tire pressure regularly, keeping your electric vehicle in a warm area like a garage and allowing your vehicle to preheat and warm up the battery before you begin your commute.

Formulas used to derive numbers

Cost to drive 100 km

PHEV : ({price/kWh} * {electric range} * {rate/kWh/100km} / 100 ) + ({price/L} * (100 - {electric range}) * {rate/L/100km} / 100 )

EV : {price/kWh} * {rate/kWh/100km}

Estimated annual savings

({gas cost} * ({current mileage} / 100) * {annual mileage}) - (({electricity consumption rate} * {electricity price}) * 200)

Some things to keep in mind

  • Your electricity rates varies by time of day
  • Winter driving can reduce EV range by approximately 40%
