2016 Optima SXL hits above its price point

    May 13, 2016

For years, the first-generation Kia Optima put up a serious argument for the dollars of family sedan shoppers after a long list of features at every price point, a pleasant drive, plenty of selection, and heavy-hitting styling that didn’t look bland and boring ― you know, something Maud Flanders would drive.

The second-generation Optima has recently launched, and the complete redesign of the original advances on all fronts, once again, to take a place as one of the market’s most persuasive choices in a high-style, highly attainable family hauler.

Kia Sportage brings a fresh face to value SUVs

    Apr 29, 2016

VERNON, B.C. — During a recent press preview event for the 2017 Kia Sportage, I was chatting with a company product planner about the Korean carmaker’s early days in Canada.

He jogged my memory by mentioning a tag line from a late ‘90s TV ad campaign that went something like this: “Why settle for a used car when you can buy a Kia?”

Suffice to say, its days as a cheerful upstart are long gone and Kia is now one of the fastest-growing automotive brands in the country.

2016 Kia Sorento SX Limited Review

    Apr 29, 2016

A modified platform, updated interior and refined exterior are the main changes, in addition to a newly offered turbocharged engine, which is found in our tester. A 2.0-liter unit like the one found in the top-of-the-line Optima that bested the VW Passat earlier this year, this engine makes 240 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque.

Little Kia Soul comes up big

    Apr 15, 2016

Kia, Soul, review, space, acceleration, options, engine, features, warranty,

    Boxy is good.

It’s not necessarily pretty, but it’s practical. Square shapes create the most interior space for passengers and cargo, always a bonus in a compact model such as Kia’s Soul. It doesn’t take up much space in the driveway, but it’s surprisingly roomy inside for its size.

This electric car is the anti-Tesla

    Apr 01, 2016

A big showdown is coming, if you believe the car-business chatter: General Motors (GM) is about to challenge Tesla’s (TSLA) dominance among electric-car makers. Toyota (TM) is planning to take on Tesla, too. And don’t forget Honda (HMC), Ford (F) and Nissan (NSANY). Telsa-battlers, all.

Tesla is the most prominent name in electric vehicles, yet beneath the radar, virtually every big automaker has built some kind of EV, with more on the way. This is happening not because car buyers are clamoring for electrics, by and large, but because governments around the world are raising the pollution standards automakers must meet, essentially forcing them to build cars that don’t burn gasoline or diesel.

First Drive : 2017 Kia Sportage

    Mar 18, 2016

You may not realize it, but the Sportage is actually one of Kia’s oldest North American models, joining the Kia lineup alongside the Sephia sedan back in 1994. Indeed, not only does that make it one of the pioneering Kias here, it makes it one of the industry’s pioneering compact SUVs/CUVs, too. That’s pretty impressive, to think that this tiny brand from South Korea was on the cutting edge of what was to become one of the biggest vehicle segments in our fair lands and around the world.

Kia proves that it's still hip to be square

    Mar 04, 2016

Hey, it's the hamster car !

So said my 10-year-old daughter when I rolled in with the 2016 Kia Soul - dipped in bright red with a gleaming black roof and black accents.

Her reference was to a series of quirky Kia adds, featuring the anthropomorphic, hipster rodents along with music by the Black Sheep, Lady Gaga and others.

Optima steps up its Euro styling for 2016

    Feb 26, 2016

Kia, like its corporate cousin Hyundai, has long been known for delivering loads of content at a reasonable price.

It's been their proposition forever, but with the arrival of Peter Schreyer to head up design in 2006, styling too has become a recognized part of the mix.

Cadenza a good fit for near-luxury buyers

    Feb 26, 2016

A colleague once declared Cadenza as Kia's best-kept-secret - a point I won't argue, having had only the occasional sighting.

In fact, AutoPacific's 2015 Vehicle Satisfaction Awards named it a segment winner in the large car category.

    Driven : 2016 Kia Optima

    Feb 19, 2016

Stylistically the new Optima is a pretty slick piece, developed under the watchful eye of Peter Schreyer. The German designer was lured from Audi, where he was credited with the Audi TT, among others. He told me in Seoul a few years ago, the attraction to switch to Kia was the opportunity to oversee design of the company's complete line of vehicles. Kia had identified design as a core growth area.
